It is Kaufman intended to put a huge hole on you, because you know there's something profoundly wrong about what shaping you... but some of us didn't wanna bother that, and probably leaving this movie with the mock
But if you stick longer, you will know that, this question, is the same question the character trying to ask here, except there is no turning back for them as they try to ending things. And with the surreal approach and symbolism all over the place, the director did a great job so we can interpretate what happen on screen, or just go with the last ride even we don't comfortable about it (intended aswell) but there's a blizzard out there and you stuck on your car, so we have no other way but facing it, and finally choose our own way of how we like to ending it
Simply put this way, if you not understand the movie, then the movies is not for you. And you better preapared yourself with a lot of Kaufman before got in here again (i'm invited you to come here again.

Her thoughts are an extension of Jakes thoughts and when they talk to each other, its a combination of Jake imagining how this relationship in his head would play out, and him having debates and discussions with himself about topics like movies, plays, his views on life and time, etc. When they argue, its Jake arguing with himself and doubting his views on certain topics and moments in his life. Its a form of his own self criticism/self hatred. When you think of a topic in your mind, you dont think of each sentence from beginning to end individually, your mind is constantly interrupting and changing the thoughts that pop up within it. Its the reason the young womans clothes change color. Its the reason Jake is seemingly able to read her thoughts, because they are his own real world thoughts seeping into the fantasy that hes trying to suppress. Its the reason characters seem to teleport from place to place. Its the reason Jake seems to get distracted by things in the real world such as the swing set, or how the word “wow” is an all purpose exclamation. Jake is constantly changing details - whether big or small - about the fantasy. Like I mentioned before its why the characters clothes change, but its also why his parents change age, and why the band aid on his dads head is switching sides. Jake is forgetting little details and trying to find different places in time to place his fantasy.

I was so confused with this, but now I understand. This was almost like a spiritual sucessor to mulholland drive in a way, great film. That scene in Cloverfield isn't just any carnival. It's Deno's Wonder Wheel at Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY.

Long story short I left the theatre and went to see it again immediately. which I've done only one other time in my life (with Independence Day. judge me. I dare you. And the movie was profound and funny and painful and everything that I wanted it to be and more and at the end I cried and went back to see it again because I like to laugh and cry and feel existential dread on repeat and now I'll follow Kaufman off a cliff into oblivion because he's the writer I wish I could be.
